Baseball fans worldwide are looking forward to the annual release of MLB The Show. Their first game came out in 2006, with Dominican slugger David Ortiz on the cover. While an official announcement from San Diego Studios hasn’t been made regarding the cover athlete, Elly De La Cruz posted to his social media that he will be featured as this year’s cover athlete for MLB The Show 25.
De La Cruz, 23, was born in Sabana Grande de Boya, Dominican Republic. He made his debut in 2023 and quickly became a fan favorite in the league. De La Cruz hit for a .235 average in his rookie season, with 13 home runs, 44 RBIs, and stealing 35 bases.
As for his second season, De La Cruz was able to show what he was capable of putting together in a full season. He would register 160 games played, hitting 25 home runs and driving in 76 RBIs while leading the league in stolen bases with 67, all while hitting for a .259 average. De La Cruz also led the entire MLB in strikeouts, going down on strikes 218 times.
Also, De La Cruz might not be the only cover athlete to be featured. About an hour after De La Cruz posted he was the cover athlete, Orioles infielder Gunnar Henderson posted about how he was the cover athlete on his Instagram page. But another hour passed, Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes took to Instagram, responding to De La Cruz and Henderson, “The cover is mine.” It will certainly be intriguing to see which athlete will be featured when MLB: The Show 25 reveals this year’s cover athlete.
Could this be a Super Bowl marketing ploy? Only time will tell.
