The LVPB’s training camp opens in a few weeks, and more players are announcing which teams they will play for this winter. Cuban-American outfielder Peter O’Brien will join the Navegantes del Magallanes.
The 34-year-old was born in Hialeah, Florida. The New York Yankees drafted him in the second round of the 2012 MLB Draft. He spent four seasons in the minor leagues before making his MLB debut in 2015 with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
O’Brien was known for his raw power as a prospect, but unfortunately, this never translated to the major leagues. He played for parts of four seasons between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Miami Marlins. In his MLB career, O’Brien has a .209 average, 11 home runs, and 26 RBIs in 72 games. He last appeared in the MLB with the Marlins in 2019.
Since the 2021 season, he has played in Liga Mexicana de Béisbol (LMB) ever since. As for the 2024 season, he played with the Pericos de Puebla, hitting .285, mashing 16 home runs and 42 RBIs in 73 games.
O’Brien played winter ball last year in Mexico with the Tomateros de Culiacan in the Mexican Pacific Winter League. O’Brien logged 65 games with the team, mashing 12 homers and 37 RBIs while only hitting for a .209 average.
This will mark O’Brien’s first time playing winter baseball in Venezuela. His first time playing in winter baseball was with LIDOM’s Toros del Este in 2021-22. During the 2022-23 winter, he played 36 games with the Leones del Escogido and just ten games with the Criollos de Caguas in the Puerto Rican Winter League.
