On Monday, D1 Baseball released their preseason top 25 college baseball rankings ahead of the 2025 season. Here are four observations from those rankings.
The SEC has been the king of the college baseball landscape, and D1 Baseball seems to believe that will continue in 2025.
Four of the top five teams are from the SEC. The only exception is Virginia, ranked second in the country behind the number one overall Texas A&M Aggies.
The other top five include LSU, Tennessee, and Arkansas, ranked third, fourth, and fifth in the country, respectively.
The SEC’s top five representation shows how dominant a conference it has been in college baseball, which will likely continue into 2025.
A wide range of teams in D1 Baseball’s top 25 were not ranked to end the 2024 season. This range of teams stretches from LSU, ranked third, to Troy, the final team in the rankings, coming in at 25 in the country.
TCU and Nebraska rank just ahead of Troy, at 23rd and 24th, respectively, and were not ranked at the end of the 2024 season.
The other four teams that were not ranked at the end of 2024 but are now ranked by D1 Baseball include Wake Forest (14th), Vanderbilt (16th), Texas (19th), and Dallas Baptist (20th).
Towards the end of the preseason rankings, three mid-major teams are making an appearance.
Dallas Baptist (20th), UC Santa Barbara (22nd), and Troy (25th) are the three to make D1 Baseball’s cut in the top 25.
UC Santa Barbara finished last season ranked 19th overall. They were a good team a year ago with 44 wins. They also finished with a 26-4 record in Big West conference play.
Dallas Baptist had a similar season to UCSB. They finished with 45 wins and were 17-7 in Conference USA play.
The Duke Blue Devils and Arkansas Razorbacks receive high praise from D1 Baseball in the preseason.
After finishing the end of last season 24th in the country, Duke comes in ranked 11th this preseason.
The Razorbacks finished the 2024 season ranked 17th. D1 Baseball ranks them 5th in the country heading into the 2025 season.
A year ago, these two teams failed to make it far in the NCAA Tournament. Perhaps this affected their final ranking last season. However, D1 Baseball sees them as big-time teams that will be very competitive this upcoming season.
