Almost a month until the action begins for the World Baseball Classic Qualifiers in Taiwan, and Nicaragua is starting to get its roster ready. After announcing that MLB veteran J.C. Ramirez and pitcher Ronald Medrano will join Nicaragua, minor league infielder Freddy Zamora will be headed to Taiwan this February alongside Ramirez and Medrano.
Zamora, 26, was born in Managua, Nicaragua, but attended high school in Miami, Florida. The second baseman/shortstop was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft out of the University of Miami. He has spent the past four seasons playing in the Brewers organization, reaching Triple-A for the first time in 2024.
This past season, Zamora played in 94 games between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting for a .193 average with four home runs and 30 RBIs while collecting nine stolen bases. He played in more games in Triple-A than Double-A, with 67 games at the Triple-A level, primarily being used as a shortstop.
The World Baseball Classic Qualifiers in Taiwan will take place from February 21 to February 25. Nicaragua is tasked with facing South Africa, Spain, and Chinese Taipei, respectively. It will be intriguing to see if Nicaragua will be able to punch their ticket and enter the World Baseball Classic for the second time in Nicaragua’s history.
