CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On Thursday, May 21, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets defeated the Virginia Cavaliers in the 2026 ACC Tournament 16-10. With the quarterfinal-round win, the Yellow Jackets move on to the ACC semifinal at Truist Field.
Georgia Tech is now two games away from winning the ACC Tournament title. The Yellow Jackets won their second straight ACC regular season title this season.
After 16 runs and 14 hits from Georgia Tech, Virginia head coach Chris Pollard made a clear statement to media members postgame.
“That is maybe the best offense in college baseball I have seen in the last ten years,” Pollard said.
Georgia Tech strings together a seven-run seventh inning
Entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Georgia Tech trailed Virginia 9-5. The Yellow Jackets then scored seven runs in the inning to take a 12-9 lead.
The go-ahead moment for Georgia Tech came when Parker Brosius hit a grand slam down by two runs to give the Yellow Jackets an 11-9 lead. Carson Kerce hit a solo home run after Brosius and made it a 12-9 game before Virginia could get out of the inning.
Ramsey talked about Brosius and his big moment that gave the Yellow Jackets the lead.
“He deserves so much credit for what he has done,” said Ramsey. “What he has done down the stretch is what champions are made of.”
From the bottom of the seventh inning until the end of the game, Georgia Tech outscored Virginia 11-1.
Yellow Jackets hit six home runs as a team
Brosius and Kerce’s home runs were two out of six total home runs the Yellow Jackets hit in the win over Virginia. Kerce had another home run in the bottom of the third inning, which was the first run of the game.
Much like Kerce, Georgia Tech catcher and 2026 ACC Defensive Player of the Year Vahn Lackey hit two home runs against the Cavaliers.
The final home run of the game for the Yellow Jackets came from first baseman Kent Schmidt. He hit a 356-foot, two-run home run down the right field line that extended Georgia Tech’s lead out to 16-10.
Lackey talked about the team’s contagious home run hitting and the belief that they were never out of the game despite the deficit.
“There is never a point where we are out of a baseball game,” Lackey said. “All of our guys in the lineup just take every at-bat one pitch at a time. We just chip away because that is who we are.”
Up next for Georgia Tech
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are in the ACC Tournament semifinal round. They will play the winner of Boston College and Miami on Saturday, May 23, at 1 p.m. at Truist Field.
