After being released by the St. Louis Cardinals, it didn’t take too long for relief pitcher Giovanny Gallegos to land a contract. He will be joining the Minnesota Twins on a minor-league contract.
Gallegos, 32, is a native of Ciudad Obregon, Mexico. After seven seasons in St. Louis, he was designated for assignment. He struggled to the tune of a 6.53 ERA in 21 appearances in the Cardinals bullpen.
The right-hander signed with the Yankees as an international free agent in 2012. He made his MLB Debut with the Yankees in 2017 but only played there for a year before being flipped alongside Chasen Shreve to the Cardinals in exchange for Luke Voit and bonus international pool money. Gallegos was on the final season of a 2-year contract, with him being set to hit the free agent market after the season.
The Minnesota Twins are in second place in the A.L. Central, trailing the Cleveland Guardians. They also hold the first Wild Card spot in the American League, so adding Gallegos could improve their chances. Minnesota currently has relievers Griffin Jax, Jorge Alcala, and Jhoan Duran in the back end of their bullpen.
The question is, will Gallegos help impact the Twins in their chase for the postseason?
