The final day in July provided fans with some close games as the hunt for the playoffs began to heat up. Here’s everything you missed from yesterday in the MLB.
Marlins 6 Rays 2
Xavier Edwards drove in three runs for Miami, helping the Marlins split the two-game Rookie Roddery Munoz allowed two runs in five innings and struck out seven to pick up his first win in nearly three months.
Orioles 10 Blue Jays 4
Jackson Holliday hit a grand slam in his first game back in the MLB after being called up on Wednesday. Holliday helped the Orioles to their fourth win in the last five with his first career MLB home run. Grayson Rodriguez allowed three earned in six innings to get the win.
The Yankees extended their win streak to five thanks to a career-high six RBIs, including a grand slam from DJ LeMahieu. Nestor Cortez pitched five and a third and picked up his first road win of the season to finish the sweep of the NL-leading Phillies.
Twins 8 Mets 3
Matt Wallner and Byron Buxton both homered to help the Twins avoid the Mets’ sweep. Minnesota remains in second place in the AL wildcard race, while the Mets fell to a half-game out in the NL.
Royals 10 White Sox 3
The Royals swept Chicago, extending their franchise-record losing streak to 17 games. Freddy Fermin and Vinnie Pasquantino homered, and Salvador Perez drove in two runs in his 1,500th career game to help Kansas City complete the sweep.
Braves 6 Brewers 2
Matt Olson and Travis d’Arnaud hit back-to-back homers twice in the game to carry the Braves to victory. This has only happened twice since the Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966. After winning the series in Milwaukee, the Braves sit atop the NL wildcard race.
Cardinals 10 Rangers 1
Tommy Pham, who was traded back to St. Louis, made his first start, collecting three hits and driving in two runs. Rookie Michael McGreevy, who made his MLB debut, allowed one run in seven innings to help the Cardinals win the series. St. Louis is a game and a half back of the final wildcard spot.
Diamondbacks 5 Nationals 4
The Diamondbacks swept the Nationals thanks to Zac Gallen pitching six innings and allowing one run. Arizona, which owns the final spot in the NL wildcard race, has won five straight series.
Red Sox 3 Mariners 2
Rafael Devers hit a walk-off double in the tenth to give Boston the series win. Both teams are in tight races for a playoff spot. The Red Sox sit two games back of the Royals for the final wildcard spot, while Seattle is in a neck-and-neck fight with the Astros in the AL West.
Cubs 13 Reds 4
The Cubs hit nine doubles for the first time since 2010 to avoid the three-game Ian Happ homered as one of Chicago’s 17 hits to blow out the playoff-hungry Reds.
Astros 5 Pirates 4
The Astros stopped their three-game skid and avoided the sweep thanks to ten strikeouts from Framber Valdez in six innings. Pittsburgh committed three errors that scored three runs for Houston.
Padres 8 Dodgers 1
San Diego jumped out to an early lead on Clayton Kershaw in his second start of the season, making the veteran come out after three and two-thirds, where he gave up seven runs. The Padres clinched the season series against the Dodgers with just a three-game series between the two left.
Rockies 2 Angels 1
Brenton Doyle broke the tie and gave Colorado the lead in the eighth inning on a solo home run that would snap their five-game losing streak. It was Doyle’s 11th home run of July.
Giants 1 A’s0
Logan Webb pitched his second career shutout, striking out six and allowing five hits. Brett Wisely hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning that scored the lone run for San Francisco and helped them finish July by winning five of their last six.
