International MLB Player of the Week: Brayan Bello, SP, Boston Red Sox

Riding a 10-game win streak, the Boston Red Sox are red hot going into the All-Star Break.

During that 10-game win streak, Brayan Bello, a 26-year-old Dominican starter, has been stellar, winning two starts, including one that was a complete game. His sparkling pitching has earned him World Baseball Network’s International MLB Player of the Week honors.

This past week, Bello made two starts for Boston, tossing a complete game in a 10-2 win against the Colorado Rockies on July 8, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk, striking out 10. On Sunday, Bello went 6 1/3 innings against Tampa Bay, allowing a run on six hits with five strikeouts as the BoSox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1.

A native of Samana, Dominican Republic, Bello is in his fourth season in Boston, though he’s been shuttled back and forth to the minors periodically each year. He’s developed into a reliable starter, pitching half his games in hitter-friendly Fenway Park, and holds a career 4.17 ERA and 1.388 WHIP over 468 1/3 innings with the Red Sox since 2022.

Bello, though, is significantly better this year than his career numbers, posting a 3.17 ERA and 1.276 thus far, having thrown 91 2/3 innings with 70 strikeouts against 34 walks.

Now in the second year of a six-year, $55 million contract, Bello will be in Boston through at least 2029, with the club holding a $21 million option for 2030.

While he may not be a No. 1 starter quite yet, he’s certainly the kind of starter that World Series-bound teams want – a solid starter with a five-pitch mix (sinker, sweeper, fastball, changeup, cutter) that keeps batters on their toes and keeps the club in the game.

The Red Sox return to action on Friday with a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Friday’s 2:20 p.m. EDT start in Chicago will be televised nationally on MLB Network, and Saturday’s game, scheduled for 7:15 p.m. EDT, will be televised nationally on FOX.
