International MLB Player of the Week – New York Mets SS Francisco Lindor

If you’re a New York Mets fan and you don’t want want to jinx anything, just forget that before this weekend, the last time the Mets swept the St. Louis Cardinals in a four-game series was in April 1986.

The Mets, who have had some ups and a lot of downs in the intervening 39 years since that last four-game sweep of the Cardinals, are off to a 15-7 start, and a good portion of their success thus far is due to shortstop Francisco Lindor, who’ll be the captain of Puerto Rico at the 2026 World Baseball Classic. His stellar performance from April 14-20 has earned him World Baseball Network’s International MLB Player of the Week honors.

Over the past seven days, the Mets went 5-2, winning one of three at Minnesota to conclude a six-game road trip before returning home for a sweep of St. Louis. While Lindor notched three hits against Minnesota, he only scored one run. The best part of his week came when the team returned to Queens, where in four games against the Cardinals, the Caguas, Puerto Rico-native went 7-for-18 with two homers, three RBIs, and four runs scored.

The series sweep gave the Mets a two-game lead in the National League East over the Philadelphia Phillies, their only division rival with a record above .500, who they’ll host for a three-game series that starts tonight at 7:10 p.m. EDT. After an off day Thursday, the Mets head south to Washington to face the Nationals for a four-game series from Friday to Monday.

Under owner Steve Cohen, the Mets have become a force in the NL East, though they have yet to find success in the playoffs. Nonetheless, after years of futility, a renewed Mets organization has drawn attention, and three games this week will be televised nationally. Fans can tune into Monday’s series opener against Philadelphia on TBS, Wednesday’s matinee against the Phillies on MLB Network, and next Monday’s 4:05 EDT game at Washington on MLB Network.
