On Thursday, it was announced that Texas Longhorns starting pitcher Jared Spencer will be out for the remainder of the 2025 season. According to the Houston Chronicle, the senior southpaw will undergo shoulder surgery.
Spencer’s injury first came up when he made an early exit last weekend during his start against Auburn.
Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle spoke about the injury news with Spencer on The Morning Kickoff Show.
“He’s not going to pitch anytime soon, unless we get some awesome news,” Schlossnagle said.
This season, Spencer had been a big-time anchor for the Texas weekend rotation on Friday night games. He was sitting with a 3.27 ERA and a 4-1 record. In his 52 and 1/3 innings of work this season, he struck out 66 hitters while allowing an opposing batting average of .215.
Spencer joins star hitter Max Belyeu on the list of players who are out for the season in Austin. The Longhorns do have pitching depth to counteract this injury. However, not having an ace is a tough blow.
According to the Texas Longhorns on Sports Illustrated, Ruger Riojas will move from pitching on Sundays to Fridays, and Luke Harrison will remain in his Saturday role. The Longhorns have plenty of options to turn to for Sunday nights, but Jason Flores seems to be a good option according to Schlossnagle.
For now, the Texas Longhorns currently have a big weekend series against the Texas A&M Aggies at Disch-Falk Field. They will defend their title as the number one team in the country and will look to jump further ahead in the Southeastern Conference standings.
