Nationals rookies combined for seven hits to take down the Orioles and push them out of first place in the AL East. One thing from each MLB game.
Nationals 9, Orioles 3
Andres Chaparro hit three doubles and drove in one run in his MLB debut. Nationals Rookie had four hits and scored three times as Washington took the first game of the series in Baltimore. The Orioles fell out of first place in the AL East with the loss.
Guardians 2, Cubs 1
The Guardians won their fourth straight after rookie Jhonkensy Noel hit a solo homer in the sixth inning to give Cleveland the lead. Chicago fell four and a half games behind the Braves for the last wildcard spot in the NL.
Jake Burger homered for the fourth straight game as Miami took the first game of the series. Valente Bellozo allowed the only four hits of the game in seven innings of work and the Marlins pitching shut down the struggling Phillies who have lost four straight.
Tigers 15, Mariners 1
Detroit scored a season-high thanks to seven RBIs from Jake Rogers and two home runs from Kerry Carpenter in his first game back from injury. Cy Young candidate Tarik Skubal picked up his league-best 14th win in a six-inning outing where he allowed one run and struck out nine. Seattle trails the Astros by one and a half games for the AL West lead.
Reds 4, Cardinals 1
Hunter Greene allowed one run and four hits while striking out eight in seven innings to help the Reds past St. Louis. Cincinnati won their second straight against the Cardinals in a battle between teams hunting for an NL wildcard spot. The Cardinals are three games out, while the Reds sit four games behind the final spot.
Astros 3, Rays 2
Alex Bregman and Jeremy Pena homered in the fifth and sixth innings to grow Houston’s lead and helped push the Astros winning streak to seven games. Yusei Kikuchi allowed one run and struck out five batters in five and two-thirds. Josh Hader slammed the door in the ninth to convert his franchise-record 26th straight save. The Astros lead the Mariners by a game and a half for the AL West.
A’s 9, Mets 4
Oakland won their third straight game thanks to a second straight four-hit game from Shea Langeliers, including a three-run homer. The Mets lost their fourth straight and trail the Braves by one and a half games for the third NL wildcard spot.
Red Sox 9, Rangers 4
Kutter Crawford brought a perfect game into the sixth inning before allowing four runs. Connor Wong hit a three-run homer as a part of a five-run fifth inning that grew the Red Sox lead. The Rangers lost their sixth game in the last seven.
Twins 13, Royals 3
Zebby Matthews struck out five hitters and allowed two runs to pick up the win in his MLB debut. Minnesota won their second game against the division foe after the Twins offense scored eight runs on Royals All-Star Seth Lugo. The Twins remained three and a half games behind the Guardians in the AL Central.
Yankees 4, White Sox 1
Juan Soto homered three times for the first time in his career and drove in all four New York runs as the Yankees took sole possession of first in the AL East. Nestor Cortez picked up nine strikeouts in seven innings to help the Yankees take game two in Chicago.
The Dodgers took the second game of the series between division leaders after Shohei Ohtani homered for the 37th time this season and second straight night. Gavin Lux and Andy Pages also homered during a five-run fourth inning to grow their lead. Los Angeles matched the Guardians for the best record in the MLB at 71-49.
Diamondbacks 4, Rockies 3
Arizona won their fifth straight on a game-winning two-RBI single from Jake McCarthy. Corbin Carroll became the tying run after a triple with one out in the ninth. Adrian Del Castillo walked before crossing home as the winning run. The Diamondbacks trail the Dodgers by three games in the NL West.
Blue Jays 6, Angels 1
Kevin Gausman dealt seven scoreless innings for the Blue Jays and struck out five to take the second straight against the Angels. A three-run first inning by Toronto that was capped off by a two-RBI double from Will Wagner gave the Jays the early lead.
Padres 3, Pirates 0
The Padres beat the Pirates for the second straight day to continue their hot month. San Diego is 9-2 in August. Manny Machado drove in two runs, including the opening run of the game in the first, to help the Padres secure the victory. The Diamondbacks and Padres remain tied for second in the NL West.
Braves 4, Giants 3
Travis d’Arnaud homered in the third and drove in the winning run with a single in the 10th for their second straight win in extras. Atlanta remained third in the wild card race and sits two games above the Mets.
