History happened last night in Detroit. Venezuelan starting pitcher Keider Montero pitched a complete game shutout en route to the Tigers’ 11-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies.
It only took Montero 96 pitches to complete this feat. He only allowed three hits and no walks while collecting five strikeouts. This marks Detroit’s first “Maddux” complete game shutout (minus 100 pitches) since David Price accomplished it in 2015, per Sarah Langs via X.
Montero, 24, is pitching in his first big-league season. So far, through 14 starts in 15 appearances, Montero has a 5-6 record, a 4.88 ERA, 65 strikeouts in 83 innings, and a 1.28 WHIP.
He began his career with the Tigers, signing out of Venezuela in 2016. He spent seven seasons in the minors before getting his opportunity and making his MLB debut in May. Before being recalled, Montero made 13 starts with Triple-A Toledo, recording a 1-4 record, a 5.03 ERA, and striking out 54 batters through 48.1 innings of work.
The Tigers are currently fourth in the A.L. Central standings, only trailing the Twins by two and a half games out of third place. As for the A.L. Wild Card, it could come down to a battle between the Royals, Twins, and Tigers, who are looking to secure the last two spots behind the Orioles. The Tigers are now on a three-game winning streak, as they hope to continue their hot streak to push into the postseason.
