KBO Commissioner Hur Gu-yeon met with the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic, proposing the Dominican national team visit South Korea, as well as that the D.R. send a team of prospects to the Ulsan-KBO Fall League, the KBO’s annual fall prospects league.
The commissioner met with Anzie Shakira Martinez Tejera, the Dominican Ambassador, on Thursday, according to a report from Spochoo, a Korean-language media outlet. The pair discussed potentially inviting the Dominican national team to Korea to help develop Korean players’ skills by having them face high-level opponents.
As KBO commissioner, Hur Gu-yeon has tried to get Korea more international competition, stating “the gap in level between Korean and international baseball is difficult to express in words” according to Spochoo’s article.
Hur sees games against high-level foreign players is the best way to close the gap.
The Ulsan-KBO Fall League is an international educational league held in Ulsan every fall that included teams from Japan, China, Cuba, and Mexico in its inaugural 2024 season.
Hur told Spochoo, “We have a great interest in the Dominican Republic, a global baseball powerhouse. We look forward to building a close cooperative relationship through active cultural exchanges via baseball.”
