Complete games are a rarity these days in Major League Baseball, but they feel even rarer in winter ball, where the three-batter rule doesn’t exist and managers frequently use between four and eight pitchers per game.
Last night, Cuban starter Odrisamer Despaigne threw a three-hit complete game shutout, throwing 129 pitches, walking one and striking out eight in the Yaquis de Obregon’s 2-0 win against the Algodoneros de Guasave. It’s just the third complete game this season in the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico.
The Algodoneros took the lead in the second inning when Taiki Sekine grounded into a double play with runners at the corners, allowing Christian Villanueva to score. They added another in the sixth when Sekine hit an RBI single to left field, sending Victor Mendoza home with an insurance run.
The win got the Yaquis to 11-13 in the second half, six games back of first-place Hermosillo (17-7).
Naranjeros de Hermosillo 13, Sultanes de Monterrey 3 – Jasson Atondo, who is second the league with a .346 batting average, went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Reivaj Garcia went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored as the Naranjeros breezed by Monterrey. Donovan Casey hit a solo homer in the first for the Sultanes.
Tomateros de Culiacan 5, Mayos de Navojoa 4 – Ramon Rios hit a pair of solo homers and Esteban Quiroz contributed another, Dwight Smith Jr. drove in a run with a sixth-inning double, and the Tomateros edged Navojoa to improve to 11-13 in the second half. Bobby Bradley hit a pair of homers for the Mayos, who fell to 8-16 in the second half.
Aguilas de Mexicali 13, Caneros de Los Mochis 1 – The Aguilas scored seven runs in the top of the first and never looked back, stomping Los Mochis and getting to an even 12-12 in the second half with the win. Alejandro Flores hit a three-run homer in the first, and Javier Salazar hit a two-run shot in the fifth for Mexicali.
Venados de Mazatlan 7, Charros de Jalisco 6 – Michael Wielansky’s 2-for-4 night gave him the lead in the race for the LAMP batting title, pushing his average to .349, but Jalisco coughed up a 4-0 lead, fell behind 6-5 in the top of the 10th and tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, only to fall in the 11th after Ricardo Serrano singled home Walter Ibarra with the winning run.
