Liga Mexicana de Beisbol: Algodoneros de Union Laguna Move Into Tie For Playoff Spot With Sixth Straight Win

Pericos de Puebla (25-21) 5, Saraperos de Saltillo (14-29) 3 – Samar Leyva’s two-run single touched off a four-run inning in the third for Puebla, and an RBI single in the fifth by Herlis Rodriguez gave the Pericos a two-run cushion that held up. Hunter McMahon threw a perfect ninth to earn his fourth save of the year. The win moves Puebla into a tie for fourth in the Zona Sur with Oaxaca.

Algodoneros at Union Laguna (21-25) 6, Conspiradores de Queretaro (20-26) 5 – Union Laguna won its sixth straight behind Eguy Rosario’s 10th inning solo homer, and former Chicago White Sox reliever Matt Foster closed out the win, allowing one hit in the bottom of the 10th. Yadir Drake went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Algodoneros. Alen Hanson hit a solo homer and Kelvin Gutierrez hit a two-run shot for Queretaro.

El Aguila de Veracruz (21-24) 3, Toros de Tijuana (31-14) 2 – How do you lose 3-2 while only allowing two hits? Allow two walks and a three-run homer, as the Toros did in the bottom of the fourth, when Tijuana’s Juan Hillman walked Roberto Valenzuela and Sebastian Elizalde before giving up a three-run homer to Daniel Montano. Austin Shenton had the only other hit for Veracruz. Justin Turner hit his sixth homer of the season for the Toros.

Leones de Yucatan (16-30) 5, Rieleros de Aguascalientes (22-24) 4 – Dalton Guthrie drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to cut the Rieleros’ lead to 4-3, and then Henry Ramos hit a two-run double that gave the Leones the win, scoring Gustavo Vargas and Marco Jaime.

Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos (21-25) 9, Bravos de Leon (26-20) 2 – Zoilo Almonte went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, hitting his 11th homer of the year, a two-run shot in the first, and Harold Ramirez went 4-for-6 with a pair of RBIs and scored three times as the Tecos took the series opener from Leon. Starter Daniel Mengden allowed one run on five hits and a walk and struck out six in five innings of work.

Tigres de Quintana Roo (20-24) 3, Sultanes de Monterrey (26-20) 2 – Alexis Wilson and Troy Viola hit RBI singles in the eighth to get Quintana Roo past Monterrey. Phillip Ervin’s fourth homer of the year drove in the Tigres’ first run. Monterrey starter Manny Banuelos went 7 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out eight, but it wasn’t enough, as Monterrey went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Olmecas de Tabasco (28-18) 6, Caliente de Durango (21-24) 3 – Seth Beer went 2-for-4, hit his 11th homer of the year, a three-run dinger in the seventh, and drove in four runs as the Olmecas stayed hot, climbing into a tie for first in the Zona Sur. Tyler Danish went five innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out five for Tabasco. Oscar Mercado homered twice for Durango in the loss.

Charros de Jalisco (28-18) 6, Guerreros de Oaxaca (25-21) 2 – Mateo Gil’s grand slam in the bottom of the ninth got the Charros their 28th win of the year, slamming the door on the Guerreros in the series opener. Kurt Heyer threw 7 1/3 innings for Jalisco, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk, striking out four to earn a no-decision.

Acereros de Monclova (26-20) 4, Diablos Rojos del Mexico (28-18) 3 – Balbino Fuenmayor’s three-run homer in the sixth gave the Acereros a 4-3 lead, and three relievers combined to allow just one hit and one walk over three scoreless innings to maintain the lead. Robinson Cano hit a two-run double for the Diablos in the loss.

Dorados de Chihuahua (18-28) 2, Piratas de Campeche (18-25) 1 – Carlos Munoz and Justin Connell hit solo homers in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to get Chihuahua past Campeche.
