Guerreros de Oaxaca 12, Diablos Rojos del Mexico 11 – Jake Sanchez took the mound in the bottom of the ninth for the Diablos, needing three outs to secure Mexico City’s first win in the series.
He gave up three hits, two runs, and never recorded an out, as Yariel Gonzalez and Yonathan Daza each hit RBI singles for the Guerreros, who won a back-and-forth game in their final at-bat and took a 3-0 series lead, putting the Diablos’ backs against the proverbial wall.
Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with a grand slam in the sixth inning of game three, scoring three runs and driving in four for Oaxaca, and Kyle Martin went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer.
The situation had been better for the Diablos in the top of the ninth, when they posted four runs in the top of the ninth to take an 11-10 lead. Robinson Cano hit a two-run homer and Ramon Flores rapped an RBI triple and later scored on a sac fly to give the Diablos an 11-10 lead.
In all, the Diablos pitching staff allowed 12 runs on 15 hits and three walks, with only reliever Jimmy Yacabonis escaping the mound without allowing a run. Yacabonis threw two perfect innings in relief, striking out four.
Now, the Guerreros have a chance to sweep the team that posted the highest regular season winning percentage in Liga Mexicana de Beisbol history with a win in game four. Jose Luis Bravo will start game four for Mexico City against Adrian de Horta for the Guerreros. Both games are scheduled to start at 10 p.m. EDT.
Sultanes de Monterrey 4, Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos 2 – Nomar Mazara’s eighth-inning single scored Roberto Valenzuela with the go-ahead run, and the Sultanes de Monterrey hung on to defeat the Tecolotes and take a 3-1 lead in the Serie de Campeonato.
Five Monterrey relievers combined to throw five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks in the win.
Yadiel Hernandez homered in the second to give Dos Laredos a 1-0 lead.
A pair of sacrifice flies in the third by Roberto Valenzuela and Asael Sanchez gave Monterrey a 2-1 lead.
Danry Vasquez tied the game with an RBI single in the fourth that scored Kennys Vargas.
Monterrey is one win away from the Serie del Rey, with Julio Teheran starting game five, which is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. EDT at UniTrade Stadium in Laredo, Texas. Robert Stock has been announced as Dos Laredos’ starter.
