LMB Playoffs: Queretaro Takes 2-0 Series Lead; Oaxaca Evens Series Against Yucatan

Day two of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol playoffs saw all three series in the Zona Sur start game two, but only two of the games were completed.

Conspiradores de Queretaro 9, El Aguila de Veracruz 1 – Queretaro took a 2-0 series lead with a 9-1 romp over Veracruz Monday evening.

Jesse Castillow went 3-for-5 for Queretaro, earning four RBIs when he launched a grand slam in the bottom of the third, a frame that saw the Conspiradores put six runs on the board. They added one more when Ali Solis grounded out to first, allowing Kevin Gutierrez to score from third, and another when Alen Hanson’s RBI single sent Beder Gutierrez home.

Carlos Viera allowed one run on six hits over six innings, striking out two and walking one for Queretaro.

The series resumes in Veracruz on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. EST. Esmil Rogers will start for Veracruz. Queretaro has yet to announce a starting pitcher for game three.

Guerreros de Oaxaca 9, Leones de Yucatan 2 – Juniel Querecuto’s pair of doubles helped Oaxaca even the series with Yucatan Monday night.

In the second, Querecuto doubled to left and later scored on Pedro Castellano’s two-run single. In the eighth, Querecuto hit a two-run double to left, scoring Jose Carlos Urena and Reynaldo Rodriguez. The double was part of a six-run inning for Oaxaca that put the game out of reach.

Veteran starter Cesar Valdez allowed two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out three in 5 2/3 innings of work. The Yucatan bullpen imploded, allowing seven runs on seven hits and one walk.

The series resumes in Merida, Yucatan, on Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST. Starting pitchers have yet to be announced for game three.

Diablos Rojos, Pericos de Puebla Game Suspended – A downpour in the eighth inning caused the the game between the Diablos Rojos del Mexico and the Pericos de Puebla to be suspended Monday evening.

The game could not be resumed after an hour of waiting and was suspended at the end of seven innings with the Diablos Rojos leading 3-2.

The game will resume today at 6 p.m. EDT from the point of suspension. By league rules, the rest day scheduled for Tuesday will be observed on Wednesday, and the rest of the series schedule will be pushed back a day. Game three will take place on Thursday in Puebla at 9 p.m. EDT.

Jose Bravo has been announced as the Diablos’ game three starter, and he’ll face Jesus Vargas of Puebla.
