Two days after a stellar one-hit outing for Colombia at the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Tucson, Ariz., Julio Teheran is looking for a place to play.

The native of Cartagena, Colombia was released by the Sultanes de Monterrey of the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol, where he made three starts in 2024 after making a one-game return to Major League Baseball with the New York Mets. With Monterrey last summer, Teheran pitched 15 1/3 innings with a 2.35 ERA, striking out 12 and walking three.

Over the winter, Teheran pitched in the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico with the eventual champion, the Charros de Jalisco, making seven starts and throwing 31.1 innings with a 6.89 ERA before returning to Colombia to pitch for the Tigres de Cartagena. He threw 9 2/3 innings over two starts with Cartagena, striking out 11 and walking one with a 6.52 ERA.

Starting for Colombia against Brazil at the WBC Qualifier on March 2, Teheran allowed one hit over six shutout innings, stifling Brazil’s batters as Colombia cruised to a 5-0 win, their first of three as they qualified for their third consecutive World Baseball Classic.

The start drew renewed attention to Teheran, who has made 255 career appearances with an 81-82 record in Major League Baseball with the Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, and New York Mets, posting a career 3.85 ERA. According to Francys Romero, Teheran has several minor league offers in the United States as well as an offer in Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League.
