Gigantes de Carolina evened the Liga Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente championship series at one game apiece with a 6-4 win against Mayaguez Wednesday night.
In the top of the first inning, Carolina’s Anderson Feliz singled to right field, scoring Bryan Torres to take a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Jose Sermo, rapped a double to right field scoring Ruben Castro and Gabriel Cancel as Gigantes extended their lead to 3-0. Oswaldo Martinez then singled to left field scoring Feliz and Sermo to put Gigantes up 5-0.
Mayaguez starting pitcher Ronnie Williams was taken out in the middle of the first inning, having pitched 0.1 innings, allowing five hits and six earned runs. The Indios had to work through their bullpen as the pitching staff combined for giving up ten hits, three walks, and nine strikeouts after the outpouring of runs first inning
In the bottom of the first inning, Chavez Young looked to get Mayaguez on the board as he drove a line drive to left field scoring Richie Palacios and cutting the score 6-1.
Gigantes starter Leroy Cruz was on cruise control during, as he pitched 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, walking one batter, and striking out three.
During the bottom of the seventh inning, Mayaguez looked to inch the game a little closer as Young singled to center field, scoring Roberto Perez and Jeremy Rivera to cut the lead to 6-4.
Gigantes relief pitcher Jose Espada came into the game in the ninth inning, retiring the side in order 1-2-3 to end the game as Gigantes won 6-4 over Indios de Mayaguez to even the championship final at 1-1.
Game 3 first pitch is slated for Friday Jan. 20 at 6:10 p.m. EST as Mayaguez travels to Carolina’s Estadio Roberto Clemente.
