Marlins acquire infielder Emmanuel Rivera from Diamondbacks for cash

MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins acquired infielder Emmanuel Rivera from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday for cash.

The 27-year-old Rivera hit .261 with four home runs, 13 doubles and 29 RBI in 86 games with Arizona last season. He also ranked fifth among MLB third baseman with a .295 average with runners in scoring position. He had one double, two RBI and two runs scored when Arizona played Texas in the 2023 World Series.

Kansas City selected the Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, native in the 19th round of the 2015 amateur draft and traded him to Arizona in 2022.

Rivera has mostly played third base with 179 games (160 starts) there but has made 18 appearances (nine starts) at first base. He has a .972 career fielding percentage and ranked eighth among National League third baseman last season with two defensive runs scored.

In a corresponding move Tuesday, Miami designated infielder Jacob Amaya for assignment.

Amaya, 25, hit .252 in 128 games with Triple-A Jacksonville after the Marlins acquired him in January 2023. He is batting .182 with two RBI in three games with Jacksonville this season.
