Michael O’Shaughnessy and Rylan Lujo with Two Home Runs for Georgia During Super Regional Win

On Saturday, June 6, the Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs 13-12 in game one of the Athens super regional at Foley Field. The reigning Southeastern Conference (SEC) regular season and tournament champions are now one win away from their first College World Series appearance since 2008.

Georgia had 16 hits as a team, with five of those hits being home runs. Michael O’Shaughnessy and Rylan Lujo both had two home runs apiece in the game. They led the charge for the Bulldogs offensively.

Lujo and O’Shaughnessy help make a comeback happen

Heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, the Georgia Bulldogs trailed Mississippi State 7-0. However, both Lujo and O’Shaughnessy helped Georgia mount a comeback to get right back into the game.

After a solo home run by 2026 SEC Player of the Year Daniel Jackson, Lujo hit a home run for Georgia’s second run of the game. A five-run fourth inning by Georgia shrank Mississippi State’s lead down to just two runs.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth inning, O’Shaugnessy hit a two-run home run to tie the game up at 7-7. Following O’Shaughnessy’s home run, Kolby Branch hit a two-run double. This gave Georgia a 9-7 lead heading into the sixth inning.

Lujo ties the game back up, O’Shaughnessy hits the game-winning home run

In the top of the sixth inning, Mississippi State got two solo home runs from Kevin Milewski and Gehrig Frei. This tied the game up at 9-9. Lujo would hit his second home run of the game to give Georgia the lead right back. It was a solo home run out to left field that gave the Bulldogs a 10-9 lead.

Mississippi State responded to Lujo’s second home run with three runs to take a 12-10 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. O’Shaughnessy then gave Georgia the lead back with his second home run. It was a three-run shot out to right field that gave the Bulldogs a 13-12 lead.

After Georgia’s super regional win over Mississippi State, Lujo is up to 13 home runs this season, and O’Shaughnessy has 20 home runs this season. Georgia is up to 170 home runs this season as a team and leads the country in home run hitting.

Up next for Georgia

Game two of the Athens super regional at Foley Field is on Sunday, June 7, at noon ET. The game is on ESPN.

If Georgia wins, they will head to Omaha for the College World Series and compete for a national championship. For Mississippi State, they need a win to keep their season alive and force a winner-take-all game three in Athens.
