Washington Nationals shortstop Nasim Nunez made the 2024 opening day roster as the 26th player after third baseman Trey Lipscomb was reassigned to minor league camp, RotoWire reported on March 27.
Nunez, 23, was born in the Bronx, N.Y. and was selected in the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 6, 2023 by Washington.
Nunez was ranked No. 21 in the Miami Marlins system from MLBpipeline.com during the 2023 regular season. He was drafted by Washington in the second round of the 2019 MLB June Amateur Draft from Collins Hill HS in Suwanee, Ga. and signed on June 9, 2019.
The switch-hitter hit .152 during spring training, playing in 22 games with five hits, one double, two RBI, two stolen bases, two walks, and seven strikeouts.
Nunez played in 20 games with four starts at shortstop during spring training. In 84 innings, he had 51 total chances, 12 putouts, 38 assists, one error, and turned seven double plays with a .980 fielding percentage.
He played two games in spring training at second base, and in six innings, he had four total chances, one putout, and three assists.
During the 2023 Arizona Fall League season, Nunez played with the Peoria Javelinas in 20 games with 94 plate appearances batted .253 with 94 plate appearances smacking 20 hits, three doubles, 15 RBI, 14 stolen bases, 13 walks, and 20 strikeouts.
In the 2023 season with Double-A Pensacola, Nunez played in 125 games with 585 plate appearances and hit .225 recording 110 hits, 11 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 43 RBI, 52 stolen bases, 87 walks, 107 strikeouts, and a .627 OPS.
Nunez was selected to play in the Futures Game in Seattle and won the Larry Doby MVP award, hitting a three-run double and swiping one base for the National League.

Nunez split the 2022 regular season between High-A Beloit and Double-A Pensacola and played in 123 games, hitting .251 with 549 plate appearances and 111 hits, 17 doubles, three triples, two home runs, 41 RBI, swiped 70 bases, 95 walks, 139 strikeouts, and a .701 OPS.
