On Tuesday, it was announced that the University of New Haven baseball team will join the Division I level for the 2026 college baseball season.

The Chargers are currently playing at the Division II level in the Northeast 10 conference.

The change will not only affect baseball, but it will also apply to all the New Haven athletic programs starting July 1. The Chargers will play amongst other mid-majors in the Northeast Conference (NEC). The school became the tenth full-time chartered member in the conference’s history.

New Haven’s Athletic Director, Devin Crosby, spoke about the jump the school is taking. “This is about positioning ourselves at the highest level. The University of New Haven’s momentum under President Frederiksen’s leadership aligns naturally with our transition to NCAA Division I and the Northeast Conference. The Blue & Gold deserve this,” said Crosby.

New Haven baseball will be eligible to compete for NEC championships during the 2027 college baseball season. They will become NCAA Tournament eligible in 2029. The time spent from now until this championship eligibility will be their division reclassification period.

The Chargers are 24-19 overall and 12-12 in Northeast 10 play. They are ranked second in the Northeast 10’s Southwest Division behind the American International Yellow Jackets.
