Right-handed pitcher Anthony Eyanson was a major trade piece in the 2026 MLB trade deadline move that sent star catcher Adley Rutschman to the Boston Red Sox.

Eyanson is now in the Baltimore Orioles farm system after spending the 2026 Minor League Baseball season in the Boston farm system. He played at the High-A and Double-A levels for the Greenville Drive and the Portland Sea Dogs.

Eyanson and his development in MiLB in 2026, Orioles’ number one prospect

Eyanson was assigned to Portland in Double-A on May 5. He pitched 20 1/3 innings for Greenville in High-A and showed some high-quality work. Over those 20 1/3 innings of work, Eyanson had a 0.44 ERA and 34 strikeouts. He allowed just one earned run in five starts for the Drive.

The right-hander threw 48 innings for the Sea Dogs before being traded from Boston to Baltimore. In those 48 innings, he had a 1.69 ERA and 60 strikeouts. Eyanson also had a 4-0 record on the mound for Portland.

In total, the 21-year-old has 94 strikeouts in 68 1/3 innings of work in Minor League Baseball this season. Over that same stretch, he has allowed just 11 runs.

According to MLB Pipeline, Eyanson’s entrance into the Orioles’ farm system makes him the team’s number-one prospect. He is also the 49th-best overall prospect in MLB Pipeline’s top 100 list.

An elite collegiate career with LSU and UC San Diego

Eyanson played three seasons of college baseball for the UC San Diego Tritons and the LSU Tigers. In 2023 and 2024, he stepped onto the scene in a big way with UC San Diego.

In 2023, as a freshman, Eyanson posted a 4.34 ERA and 34 strikeouts over 29 innings. He picked up two wins on the mound during his freshman year with the Tritons against Northern Colorado and Long Beach State.

The right-hander had a breakout season in 2024 with UC San Diego. He made nine starts and pitched 82 total innings that year. During those 82 innings of work, Eyanson had a 3.07 ERA and 85 strikeouts. He also allowed an opposing batting average of .190. He led the Tritons in strikeouts during his sophomore season and was second-team All-Big West.

After two seasons in San Diego, Eyanson hit the transfer portal and landed at LSU for the 2025 college baseball season. During that season, he became a pivotal member of an elite LSU starting rotation that featured him, Kade Anderson, and Chase Shores.

Eyanson finished with a 3.00 ERA and 152 strikeouts in 108 innings of work for the Tigers in 2025. He was a Baseball America first-team All-American that season and was also second-team All-Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Eyanson also wrapped up his collegiate career as a national champion. He helped lead the Tigers to their eighth national championship in 2025.

After winning the 2025 national title, Eyanson was selected in the third round of the 2025 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox with the 87th overall pick.
