Yainer Diaz, the Houston Astros catcher from Azua, Dominican Republic, confirmed to Diario Libre on March 6 that he intends to represent his home country in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. As he opens the 2025 MLB season in a platoon role behind the plate, Diaz is this week’s World Baseball Classic spotlight player at World Baseball Network.
The 26-year-old made his MLB debut with the Astros on September 2, 2022, against the Los Angeles Angels, and is now in his fourth season with Houston. Cleveland originally signed him in 2016 and came to the Astros in a 2021 trade that sent outfielder Myles Straw to the Guardians. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, Diaz has also seen time at first base, designated hitter, and catching.
Diaz and Victor Caratini have been sharing catching duties for the Astros to begin the 2025 season under second-year manager Joe Espada.
During the 2025 spring training, Diaz appeared in 15 games and batted .195/.233/.341 over 43 plate appearances, recording eight hits, two home runs, four RBI, two walks, and nine strikeouts.
Diaz has struggled at the plate to start the regular season, hitting .061/.139/.061 over nine games with two hits, one RBI, three walks, and 10 strikeouts in 36 plate appearances.
Defensively, Diaz has started eight games at catcher through 72 innings, handling 95 chances with 92 putouts, three assists, and no errors.
In 2024, Diaz played in 148 games for Houston, batting .299 with 175 hits, 29 doubles, three triples, 16 home runs, 84 RBI, 24 walks, 107 strikeouts, and a .766 OPS in 619 plate appearances.
Diaz has appeared in three postseason series for Houston, including the 2023 ALCS and the 2024 Wild Card Series. He went 3-for-21 overall with one RBI and one walk in nine games.
Over five MLB seasons, Diaz has played in 267 games for Houston, compiling a 6.0 WAR with a .283 batting average, 278 hits, 52 doubles, three triples, 39 home runs, 146 RBI, 39 walks, 193 strikeouts, and a .773 OPS in 1,041 plate appearances.
The Dominican Republic will evaluate Diaz throughout the 2025 MLB season as they consider players for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, with Albert Pujols managing and Nelson Cruz serving as general manager.
Under the leadership of President Juan Nunez, the Federacion Dominicana de Beisbol is expected to evaluate offensive options for the 2026 WBC throughout the 2025 season. Players on their radar include Ketel Marte, Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto, Geraldo Perdomo, Mark Vientos, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Jasson Dominguez, Rafael Devers, Jeremy Pena, Manny Machado, Elly De La Cruz, Willy Adames, Julio Rodriguez, Jose Ramirez, Austin Wells, Gary Sanchez, and, of course, Yainer Diaz.
If Diaz can rediscover the form that helped him bat .299 last season, he’ll not only reclaim his role as Houston’s primary catcher but could lock in a key spot on one of the deepest WBC rosters in the tournament.
