JUPITER, Fla. — The first day of the 2026 MLB Spring Breakout took place Thursday across the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues during the final stretch of spring training.
In Jupiter, the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals were featured in a doubleheader, beginning with a 5-1 St. Louis win in Grapefruit League play before the organizations turned the field over to their top prospects for a 9-8 Cardinals victory in the Spring Breakout showcase.
The Spring Breakout game highlighted two of the top prospects in baseball in JJ Wetherholt and Eli Willits, while also showcasing depth across both farm systems in a back-and-forth game that featured 17 total runs.

The Cardinals then scored five runs in the sixth inning to take control of the game, with contributions across the lineup including Wetherholt, who reached base twice and scored twice.
St. Louis Cardinals Liam Doyle, Tanner Franklin, Yhoiker Fajardo
Cardinals No. 2 prospect Liam Doyle allowed four earned runs in the first inning in his start.
Right-hander Tanner Franklin followed with three innings of one-run baseball to earn the win.
“It’s really cool to have the chance to pitch in this game, showcase what our organization has, and just keep getting better every day,” Franklin told World Baseball Network.
Yhoiker Fajardo earned the save and showed increased velocity, with reports of reaching up to 98 mph this spring.
Broadcast analysis noted his fastball development and projectability within the Cardinals system.
Wetherholt, Willits Set the Tone
The focus coming in was clear: JJ Wetherholt vs. Eli Willits.
Willits, the 2025 No. 1 overall pick, showed his game immediately — working a walk, stealing a base, and scoring to open things up for Washington.
Wetherholt answered in a different way — controlled at-bats, getting on base, and staying in the middle of everything the Cardinals did offensively.
