Free agent reliever Jonathan Loáisiga is keeping himself warm this winter by pitching for the Indios del Bóer in the APBN. The news was announced on the Indios del Bóer’s Instagram account on Dec. 11. There was a press conference on Dec. 16 to make it official. 

​The plan is for him to appear in 10 games, and he will be available to pitch for the Indios del Bóer in the APBN round robin on Dec. 26. Loáisiga is an MLB free agent, and has made it known to any MLB team that wants to sign him that he will only sign on the condition that he be able to pitch in the 2026 World Baseball Classic for Nicaragua. 

​“Wherever I sign, my priority is to be in the World Baseball Classic with Nicaragua,” Loáisiga told the media at his introductory press conference. 

Loáisiga, 31, pitched for Nicaragua in their first World Baseball Classic appearance in 2023. Nicaragua went 0-4 in Pool D at loanDepot Park in Miami. They qualified for the 2026 WBC by going 3-0 in the WBC qualifiers at the Taipei Dome in Taiwan on Feb. 23, 2025. They will be in Pool D in Miami again for the WBC this spring. 

​Loáisiga was signed by the San Francisco Giants as an international free agent out of Nicaragua on Sept. 23, 2012. Loáisiga never made it to MLB with the Giants, and he battled through injuries that caused him to miss two seasons from 2014-2015. Loáisiga was released by the Giants after the 2015 season, and he signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees. 

​Loáisiga made his Major League Baseball debut with the Yankees on June 15, 2018, and he became the first Nicaraguan to ever play for the Yankees. Loáisiga made his debut as a starting pitcher, but was eventually transitioned into a multi-inning reliever.

Loáisiga spent eight seasons with the Yankees, but his tenure was full of injuries. He only pitched 48 innings or more in two of his eight seasons in pinstripes.

Loáisiga’s best season with the Yankees was in 2021, when he pitched 70 2/3 innings with 69 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.17. 

​In 2025, he pitched 29 2/3 innings, striking out 25 batters and posting an ERA of 4.25, before being shut down for the season on August 28 due to a right elbow flexor strain.

​He was on the Yankees’ postseason roster four times, and he pitched 15 innings with 10 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.60. 

In his eight-year MLB career, Loáisiga threw 249 1/3 innings with 232 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.54. 

​This opportunity with the Indios del Bóer will be a good opportunity for Loáisiga to show that he is fully healthy and ready to pitch for an MLB team in 2026.
