The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks are one win away from their second consecutive Japan Series titles after a 2-1 walk-off victory over the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in Game 3 at Mizuho PayPay Dome.

Trailing 1-0 with two outs in the ninth, the Hawks tied the game on Taisei Makihara’s RBI single before Tomoya Masaki ended it with a solo homer in the 10th. SoftBank has won all three games in extra innings, marking the first time in Japan Series history that the opening three games have gone beyond nine.

DeNA struck first in the fifth against Haru Matsumoto as former Hawk Masaki Mimori reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second, and scored on Takeru Furuichi’s two-out single. Matsumoto allowed one run on six hits over six innings, striking out five without issuing a walk.

BayStars ace Katsuki Azuma worked out of trouble throughout his outing, scattering six hits over seven scoreless innings. DeNA turned a whopping five double plays, including in the seventh when Azuma caught a comebacker from former batterymate Yuudai Yamamoto and doubled off Makihara at second.

The BayStars carried the one-run lead into the ninth, but Ryoya Kurihara led off with a double to right against closer Sean Reynolds. After two outs, on a 3-1 count, Makihara singled home pinch runner Itua Ikhine to tie it on a bang-bang play at the plate.

In the 10th, leadoff man Masaki homered off José Ruiz for his second home run of the series to walk it off. Kazuki Sugiyama, who saved the first two games, earned the win with a scoreless top half.

The Pacific League pennant winners will have their first chance to clinch the title in Game 4 Wednesday night. DeNA led in the ninth in both Games 2 and 3 but couldn't hold on and must now win four straight contests to win the championship.
