Nikola Jokić and Victor Wembanyama played twice in four days last week, in Belgrade and then Orléans. They split.
They have met seven times in the NBA. Two of those tell you why the meetings mattered.
On Jan. 3, 2025 — Wembanyama's 100th game — Jokić went to the Sombor Shuffle on a winner-take-all possession. That is the turnaround, one-legged, high-arcing fadeaway launched from behind his head, the shot Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Davis and Rudy Gobert and Chet Holmgren have all failed to reach. Wembanyama got to it. Jokić bailed mid-shot, flung a panicked pass, and San Antonio won.
Fifteen months later, on April 4 at Ball Arena, he got the possession back. A minute left in overtime, Denver up two, everybody cleared out. Jokić dropped his shoulder into Wembanyama, spun off his pivot, and shot a fifteen-footer over a ten-foot obstacle. It went in. Denver won 136-134. Wembanyama finished with 34 points, 18 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks in the loss.
Jokić brought up the old block himself afterward, unprompted. He had not forgotten it. "I kind of threw it away, and we lost the game," he said. Writing it up for the Denver Post, Bennett Durando reached outside basketball entirely for a comparison and landed on a full-count at-bat between Ohtani and Judge.
Hold that thought.
Some context on who got on the plane to Belgrade. Jokić currently leads the entire 2020s in total points, total rebounds, total assists and total steals — regular season and playoffs combined, roughly 14,640 points, 6,680 rebounds, 4,880 assists and 775 steals. No player in NBA history has led a decade in four of the five major statistical categories; the previous record was three, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in the 1970s. Only blocks got away from him, and that belongs to Myles Turner. In April he became the first player ever to lead the league in rebounds and assists in the same season.
The decade has four years left and the scoring margin is thin — he passed Jayson Tatum only recently — so none of it is final. But that is the player. The most statistically dominant man of his sport's decade spent the third week of August in Belgrade playing a game that did not count.
Serbia won that one 90-87. France won the rematch in Orléans 91-90, on a Jaylen Hoard layup at the buzzer. Neither counted for anything.
Wembanyama flew to Serbia anyway. So did Rudy Gobert and Evan Fournier. The French federation named Wembanyama captain for the trip — his first appearance in the jersey since the 2024 gold-medal game, after a blood clot in his shoulder cost him the end of a season and all of EuroBasket.
He is 22, has just signed one of the largest contracts in the history of his sport, and spent the middle of August playing exhibitions in Serbia and France.
Basketball spent fifteen months building a road. Baseball spent fifteen months building a waiting list.
The math nobody puts side by side
Those games were the warmup for Window 4 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 qualifiers, which opened Thursday. From above, the system looks like this:

Six teams. That is the entire Olympic field.
The United States is in as host.
The Dominican Republic and Venezuela qualified through the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Two more come out of the 2027 WBSC Premier12 — one to the best-placed Asian team, one to the best-placed team from Europe or Oceania.
The last spot is decided at a final qualifying tournament no later than March 2028: two teams from the Asian Championship, two from the European Championship, one from Oceania, and the winner of the Africa Cup. No team from North or South America is eligible.
Twenty-four players per roster. One hundred forty-four athletes total. Two groups of three, then a quarterfinal round — a six-team tournament with a quarterfinal round.
And baseball is not a permanent Olympic sport. It was approved as one of five optional additions for Los Angeles. The sport's international governing body has to make the case again, from scratch, for every Games.
One Thursday
The scale is easier to see on a single day. When Window 4 opened, all four confederations played.
France hosted Slovenia in Paris. Germany played the Netherlands in Cologne, Israel played Poland in Riga, Croatia played Latvia in Zadar. Finland hosted Sweden in Helsinki, Hungary hosted Estonia in Miskolc. Qatar played China in Doha, Saudi Arabia played Japan in Jeddah. Tunisia played Cape Verde in Radès, Egypt played Senegal in Dakar. Argentina played Puerto Rico in Mar del Plata, Chile played the United States in Santiago, Brazil played the Dominican Republic in Brasília.
Thirteen games, four continents, nine time zones, one afternoon. Every nation in them knowing exactly what winning gets them.
What Italy has to do
Here is the thing that makes all of the above worth a baseball site's attention.
Serbia plays Italy in Pesaro on Aug. 31. Italy is 5-1 in Group J and comfortably positioned to reach the World Cup in Qatar. Their basketball team has a road, and they're on it.
Now look at their baseball team.
Italy went 4-0 in Pool B at the World Baseball Classic in March — beat the United States 8-6, beat Mexico 9-1 — then beat Puerto Rico 8-6 in the quarterfinals, in front of the first baseball game ever televised nationally in Italy, before losing 4-2 to eventual champion Venezuela in the semifinals. Roughly seven million people watched at home on a broadcast that started after 1 a.m.
Five wins, one loss, a top-four finish in the world.
Italy is not in the 2027 Premier12. Ranked 14th, and only the top 12 got automatic bids. They have to finish top two at the Barcelona qualifier, Oct. 9-11 at Carlos Pérez de Rozas Stadium — a single round-robin against Colombia, Germany and host Spain. Italy opens against Colombia at noon on the 9th. And the Premier12 is where it matters: the WBSC confirmed the top Asian team and the top Europe/Oceania team from it qualify for Los Angeles.
So: Italy beats the United States in March, and in October has to win a four-team tournament in Barcelona for the right to play in a tournament in November 2027, for the right to be Europe's Olympic team in 2028. If that fails, there's a last-chance qualifier in early 2028.
Meanwhile the team that automatically qualified out of Europe is the Netherlands, ranked ninth in the world in baseball — and ranked 24th of 24 in FIBA's European qualifiers.
Germany is also in that Barcelona pool. Same country whose basketball team holds both the EuroBasket and World Cup titles. Same country that runs the Baseball-Bundesliga and hosts the 2027 European baseball championship in Regensburg.
The ballpark at the center of everything
Olympic baseball will be played at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers are the club at the center of the salary cap fight — the exhibit the other owners point to. Their owner spent the past twelve months on both sides of the capped and uncapped divide in American sport, buying and then agreeing to sell the Lakers at a record valuation.
And Tarik Skubal, whom Los Angeles acquired at the deadline for Zyhir Hope, River Ryan and Brady Smith, reaches free agency at the end of this season — which is to say, at almost exactly the moment a lockout would begin. The collective bargaining agreement expires Dec. 1.

What baseball is actually missing
It is not games. There are fifteen major league games tonight, plus baseball in Japan, Korea, Mexico, Taiwan, the Dominican summer league, Regensburg, Rotterdam and Dubai.
It is a calendar.
Basketball's national teams play six times across fifteen months — home and away, every window, results carrying forward. A country that loses in November can fix it in February. There is always a next game, and the next game always counts for something.
Baseball's national teams play in March, every four years. Then nothing. No windows, no home-and-away, no standings to climb. Between one World Baseball Classic and the next, the only competitive path is a qualifier here and a Premier12 there, spaced years apart and mostly invisible.
That is why Italy's March means so little in August. They beat the United States, finished top four in the world, and the next thing on their schedule that matters is a three-game round-robin in Barcelona in October — against Colombia, Germany and Spain — for the right to enter a tournament in November 2027.
Wembanyama, asked about being back with France after two years away, told BasketUSA: "I don't miss the NBA at the moment, but I do miss FIBA."
