With less than three weeks to play in the regular season, the final wild card spot in both the American League and the National League is up for grabs.
National League
The Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies seem locked into two of the wild card spots, barring a collapse in the final weeks. However, the Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres, St Louis Cardinals, Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates are still kicking around for the third spot.
The Diamondbacks entered play on Tuesday with a half-game lead over the Padres for the final spot. They got former Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes back and are in a good spot.
However, the Padres are on their tail, and the two teams will play a three-game series to end the regular season. That series could end up deciding who makes the postseason, but both teams have to make sure the Marlins don't make things too interesting.
The Marlins trailed by five games in the wild card race entering play on Tuesday, but unlike the Pirates or Cardinals, the Marlins play the Padres and the Diamondbacks in the next few weeks.
The Marlins are well aware of what's at stake. They are reportedly looking to avoid pitching former Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara against the Dodgers, saving him to face the Diamondbacks. The Marlins seem to be going all-in for that series, knowing they likely need a sweep to stay alive.
American League
In the American League, the wild card race is all about the American League East. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are expected to be the top two wild card teams, but should one of them pass the Tampa Bay Rays to win the division, the Rays would be one of the wild card teams.
The final spot is a fight between the Cleveland Guardians, Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers, and Baltimore Orioles.
The Orioles have started to fall behind in the race, but the Blue Jays, Guardians and Rangers are expected to go down to the wire. The Blue Jays entered Tuesday trailing by one game. The Rangers entered Tuesday trailing by 1 1/2 games.
The Blue Jays will have a chance to make it a two-horse race in the coming weeks with a series against the Rangers and two series against the Orioles remaining. A strong showing in those series could make it a showdown between the Guardians and the reigning American League champions.
The Blue Jays own the season series against the Guardians this season, so all they need is to tie in the win column.
The Guardians don't play a team with a record above .500 the rest of the way, so the Blue Jays will not only have to play well, but they will need someone to play spoiler.
