The LBPN is underway and almost through its first full week. Every team has at least one win in the win column its opening weekend in Nicaragua. Some teams are off to hot starts, while others still are looking for their first win. Here are the news and notes about what happened and what is coming up in the LBPN as of Nov. 4.
Game Rescheduling and Look Ahead to Action-Packed Friday
Due to heavy rain, multiple league games have been scheduled. The first contest between Leones de Leon and Gigantes de Rivas, scheduled for Nov. 6, will now be next Monday, Nov. 11, at 6:00 p.m. EST.
The game between Tren del Norte and Tigres de Chinandega, originally scheduled for Nov. 7, will now be played on Monday, Nov. 25, at 6:00 p.m. EST.
Finally, Indios de Boer has had two of its games rescheduled: one against Tren del Norte on Nov. 6 will now happen on Nov. 18, and a game against Gigantes de Rivas will now take place on Friday, Nov. 8. This means that Friday, Nov. 8, will consist of three games: a doubleheader between Indios de Boer and Gigantes de Rivas and a game between Leones de Leon and Tigres de Chinandega.
League Leading Boer Make Roster Move
Indios de Boer is 3-0, its best start in 14 seasons. With a doubleheader ahead of them, the team is still making moves. The team announced that it has released right-handed pitcher Kevin Keary Kelly and activated right-handed pitcher Zeke Wood.
Kelly was released because he will pitch in the 2024 WBSC Premier12 for his home nation, the Netherlands. He will rejoin the team after the tournament concludes.
Zeke Wood fills Kelly’s foreign slot as the 24-year-old from Sulphur Springs, Texas, helps Indios de Boer keep their 30-man roster full. This is off the heels of a 5-4 win for the Boer over Tigres de Chinandega on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
Leones de León Win First Game at Rigoberto López Pérez Stadium
The Leones de Leon were the last winless team in the LBPN, but they broke through with a 10-6 win on Nov. 5 against Tren Del Norte. This was the Leones’ first win this season and their first win in the new Rigoberto Lopez Perez stadium.
It was not easy for Leones, as Tren scored two runs in both the first and second innings of the game, while Leones only scored one to make it 4-1 after two innings. However, Leones put together an impactful bottom-of-the-third inning, highlighted by two doubles from Willy Garcia and Chase Dawson, which led to a six-run inning for the Leones. Now up 7-4, the Leones turned to their bullpen.
Early on, the bullpen struggled, allowing Tren to score a run in the sixth and seventh to make it 7-6. But Ernesto Glasgon and Ismael Cabrera Taveras came in as the last two relievers to provide enough stability for the Leones and give their offense assurance. Leones scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the game out of reach, and they won the game 10-6 in a memorable opener for Rigoberto Lopez Perez stadium.
