A handful of top Major League Baseball prospects finally received the opportunity to showcase their skills.
All the reps at college practices and long bus drives in the minors paid off. These five youngsters recently made their MLB debut for their organization.
Agustín Ramírez, C, Miami Marlins – Ramírez is the Marlins’ No. 4-ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline. The 23-year-old catcher was the main piece in the Marlins-New York Yankees trade that sent second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the Bronx.
The Dominican Republic native made his MLB debut on Monday, getting the start behind the plate in a 6-3 win against the Cincinnati Reds. Ramírez collected his first MLB hit on an infield single to shortstop in the bottom of the second and finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.
Caleb Durbin, 2B, Milwaukee Brewers – Like Ramírez, Durbin used to be a minor league player in the Yankees farm system, traded to the Brewers before the start of spring training in a package for left-hander Nestor Cortes. He’s the Brewers’ No. 21-ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline.
The speedy second baseman set a single-season Arizona Fall League record this past November with 29 stolen bases. He’s swiped 48 bases in 52 attempts in two seasons in the AFL. Durbin made his MLB debut last Friday at third base, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored. Durbin hit his first MLB homer three days later, a first-inning two-run shot off Robbie Ray of the San Francisco Giants.
Hunter Dobbins, RHP, Boston Red Sox – Dobbins is the Red Sox’s No. 14-ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline. The righty recorded a win in his MLB debut on April 6, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in five innings in an 18-7 blowout in the second game of a day-night doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Dobbins is back at Triple-A Worcester but should see more innings at the MLB level with the Red Sox at some point this season. He’s a relatively hard thrower for today’s standards, averaging 94.9 mph on his fastball.
Tim Tawa, 2B, Arizona Diamondbacks – After 420 games in the minors, Tawa, 26, made his MLB debut with the D-Backs on April 5 against the Washington Nationals.
Arizona’s No. 25 prospect on MLB Pipeline and a Stanford University product, Tawa went 1-for-3 with an RBI fielder’s choice in the seventh inning of the 4-3 win at Nationals Park. Tawa is off to a sizzling start to his career at the plate, with an OPS+ of 158 and three home runs in his first 41 plate appearances.
Logan Henderson, RHP, Milwaukee Brewers – Henderson is the Brewers’ No. 12 prospect on MLB Pipeline, and made significant headlines for his performance in his MLB debut on Sunday against the Athletics.
The 23-year-old struck out nine in six innings of one-run ball, with the only run allowed a solo home run by outfielder Seth Brown. After the Brewers’ 14-1 slaughtering of the A’s, Henderson was optioned back to Triple-A Nashville by Milwaukee, but he should be back with the MLB club during the year.
Additional Recent MLB Debuts
Tirso Ornelas, OF, San Diego Padres – Pinch-hit and went 0-for-1 on April 19 against the Houston Astros.
Will Wilson, SS, Cleveland Guardians – Went 1-for-4 with a single on April 23 against the New York Yankees.
Sauryn Lao, RHP, Seattle Mariners – Threw 1 2/3 scoreless relief innings on April 22 against the Boston Red Sox.
