The Washington State Cougars’ roster is set for Fall practices ahead of the 2025 college baseball season. On the roster is middle infielder Gavin Roy from Sudbury, Ontario. He joins the Cougars with an opportunity in major division one college baseball for the first time in his career.
Roy was previously a junior college player at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kan. Here, he played both his freshman and sophomore seasons, getting a healthy dose of at-bats with a total of 371 in his two seasons. He had a career batting average of .326 with five home runs, 21 doubles, and 64 RBI. He also had a career on-base percentage of .431 with 48 stolen bases. This gives him a well-rounded offensive game with room to grow in hitting for power.
The on-base rate and stolen bases are important to note in Roy’s game. He could help a Washington State team that struggled in both those categories. The Cougars finished third to last in the Pac-12 in stolen bases and were second to last in the conference in on-base percentage.
Arguably, the biggest improvement Roy made in his jump at Cloud County from his freshman to his sophomore season was his defense. His fielding percentage improved from .939 to .957 while playing seven more games than a season ago. He also cut down on his errors while making a jump in his total putouts and assists.
Roy was a great pickup for this Washington State Cougars team looking to build its baseball program with a great 2025 season. Roy is a great addition as he has developed nicely on defense in a vital position in the middle of the infield and can help Washington State offensively with his ability to get on base and steal bases.
The biggest part of this is that he gets a chance to show what he can do now that he is playing for a big division one school in college baseball.
