Puerto Rican LHP Jonathan Bermudez Signs With Rakuten Monkeys For 2025 CPBL Season

Puerto Rican left-handed pitcher Jonathan Bermudez signed with the Rakuten Monkeys for the 2025 Chinese Professional Baseball League regular season in Taiwan, CPBL Stats reported on December 26.

Last season, the Rakuten Monkeys lost in four games in the best-of-five semifinal series to the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions in the first-year of the CPBL having extended playoffs.

Bermudez, 29, was born in Coamo, Puerto Rico and elected free agency from the Miami Marlins organization on October 10, 2024 prior to him signing with the Rakuten Monkeys.

Bermudez made his Major League Baseball debut with Miami on the road against the Colorado Rockies on August 27 out of the bullpen.

He has only appeared in the three games and one start in his MLB career from last season while posting a 0-1 record with a 8.10 ERA, throwing 6.2 innings, allowing 11 hits, six earned runs, two home runs, two walks, and striking out four batters.

Bermudez played between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-a Jacksonville in the 2024 season, and went 4-6 with a 3.38 ERA, throwing 101.1 innings in 21 appearances and 18 starts, allowing 76 hits, 38 earned runs, 12 home runs, 50 walks, 99 strikeouts, and a 1.243 WHIP.

Bermudez was designated for assignment by the Marlins twice last season on September 12 and August 31 alongside having his contract selected twice by the organization on August 25 and September 7.

In the 2023 season, Bermudez played in Double-A Pensacola and posted a 5-5 record with a 4.58 ERA, throwing 94.1 innings with 19 appearances and 18 starts, allowing 91 hits, 48 earned runs, 14 home runs, 39 walks, 109 strikeouts, and a 1.378 WHIP

Bermudez has played six seasons in the minor leagues with the Houston Astros from 2018-22 and was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants on August 23, 2022 prior to him signing with Miami to a minor league contract on April 26, 2023.

He has played 122 games with 85 starts in the minors, with a lifetime record of 23-27 and a 4.58 ERA, throwing 479 innings, two saves, allowing 440 hits, 244 earned runs, 64 home runs, 203 walks, 538 strikeouts, and a 1.342 WHIP.
