Puerto Rico Wins Vs. Mexico, But Only Gets to Go Home

Puerto Rico’s Indios De Mayaguez ended the 2023 Caribbean Series on a high note, beating Mexico’s Caneros De Los Mochis 9-3. 

Puerto Rico played well with a 4-3 record despite not reaching the semifinals at the Caribbean Series for the second straight year. Mayaguez manager Mako Oliveras assigned starting pitcher Alex Sanabia to the mound as he went five innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs, no walks, and striking out one batter.

Puerto Rico struck early in the top of the first as Vimael Machin laced a single to center field and Ruben Castro came in to score the first run of the game. 

During the top of the third, Puerto Rico capitalized for more runs as Emmanuel Rivera drove a single center field and Bryan Torres came in to score for a 2-0 lead. A few batters later, Edwin Diaz drove a three-run home run over the left field wall for a 5-0 lead.  

Los Mochis starting pitcher Darel Torres left the game in the third inning, having thrown 2.2 innings , allowing five earned runs, 10 hits, no walks, and striking out one batter, forcing manager Jose Moreno to bring Miguel Vasquez enter the game.  

In the bottom of the fourth, Mexico got on the board when Joey Terodoslavich drove a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Roberto Valenzuela. A few batters later, Fernando Villegas singled on a line drive to center field scoring Rodolfo Amador and Jasson Atondo to cut the deficit to 5-3.  

Mayaguez cashed in more insurance runs when Roby Enriquez doubled on a fly ball to center field scoring Vimael Machin and Danny Ortiz to make it 7-3. 

Puerto Rico’s bullpen finished the game combining with no earned runs, no walks, no hits and five strikeouts during yesterday’s win.  

Puerto Rico’s offensive outburst in a 9-3 win over top seed Mexico as Mayaguez will not be able to qualify them into the semi-finals due to Colombia losing last night against 7-4 Venezuela’ as Leones De Caracas moves on to the semifinals.

Colombia’s Vaqueros de Monteria will play Leones de Caracas at 6:30 p.m. EST at La Rinconada. Dominican Republic’s Tigres Del Licey, who yesterday beat Curacao 6-2 to punch their ticket to the semifinals as the fourth seed, will meet Mexico at 2:30 p.m. EST at Estadio Forum La Guaira. Every game of the 2023 Caribbean Series is available via ESPN Deportes and streamed online on ESPN+.
