RECAP: 2024 Baseball European Champions Cup Day 1

The VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe and the Guggenberger Legionäre Regensburg from the Baseball-Bundesliga Division I, which is operated by the Deutscher Baseball Softball Verband, and the Eagles Praha and the Draci Brno from the Extraliga, operated by the Czech Baseball Association, will be the participating teams in the 2024 Baseball European Champions Cup.

 

The 2024 BECC will begin on May 15, when VOITH Heidenheim Heideköpfe will face Eagles Praha at the Hellensteinenergie Ballpark Heidenheim in Heidenheim, Germany. Draci Brno will play Guggenberger Legionaere Regensburg at the YD Baseball Arena in Brno, Czech Republic. Both games will start at 7 p.m. Central European Time.

 

All regular season games will be played on Wednesdays, with games on May 15, June 5, June 12, July 17, August 14, and August 21.

 

During the 2024 BECC scheduled dates, the games will be played at Armin-Wolf-Arena in Regensburg, Germany, and at the Baseballový areál Eagles Praha in Prague, Czech Republic.

 

The top two teams will play the championship game on Saturday, September 28, at a venue to be determined. The 2024 Baseball European Champions Cup title game will start at 9 a.m. EST on September 28.

VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe 13, Eagles Praha 0 F/7 – Hellensteinenergie Ballpark Heidenheim

 

The VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe offense had 13 hits in their first game of the 2024 BECC against the Eagles Praha pitching staff during their seven-inning mercy rule win on Wednesday night.

 

The Eagles Praha offense had two hits on Wednesday.

 

The Eagles Praha pitching staff allowed 13 earned runs, five walks, and three strikeouts.

 

Eagles Praha starting pitcher Natsuki Tamba recorded the loss, threw three innings, allowed three hits, two earned runs, and walked two batters on Wednesday night.

 

The VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe pitching staff walked one batter and struck out 12.

VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe starting pitcher Jared Mortenson recorded the win and threw six innings, allowed one hit, one walk, and struck out 10 batters.

 

VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe third baseman William Germaine launched a three-run home run off of Eagles Praha relief pitcher Emmanuel Herrera in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring center fielder Gary Owens and first baseman Simon Guhring to extend the lead to 10-0.

 

VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe second baseman Drew Janssen had two hits in two at-bats, scoring two runs, driving in two RBIs, and walking one.

 

Owens had three hits in four at-bats with one run scored and one RBI.

 

Germaine scored three runs with four RBI and two hits in four at-bats.

 

VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe right fielder Shawn Larry recorded two hits, two RBI and scored one run in four at-bats.

 

VOITH Heidenheim Heidekoepfe shortstop Simon Liedtke had one hit in four at-bats, scored one run with two RBI, and struck out once.

 

Draci Brno 2, Guggenberger Legionaere Regensburg 0 – YD Baseball Arena

 

Draci Brno did not get their first run of the game until the bottom of the fourth inning on Wednesday night when first baseman Alex Monsalve lifted a solo home run over the left field fence off Guggenberger Legionaere Regensburg starting pitcher Scott Harkin to make it 1-0.

 

Harkin took the loss on Wednesday night and threw five innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, one walk, and six strikeouts.

 

Draci Brno starting pitcher Yoervis Medina won the game, threw five innings, and allowed two hits, two walks, and three strikeouts.

 

Draci Brno relief pitcher Jhenderson Hurtado recorded the save and threw three innings, allowing one hit, one walk, and struck out two batters.

 

The Draci Brno pitching staff combined to allow three hits, walking four batters, and striking out five during the first day of the 2024 BECC.

 

Draci Brno right fielder Martin Kalabek scored the second run of the game on a wild pitch during catcher Jakub Winkler’s at-bat in the bottom of the seventh inning with one out.

 

Hurtado shut the door with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth inning and got Guggenberger Legionaere Regensburg second baseman Edoardo Cornelli to ground out to third baseman Jonas Krejci as he threw the ball over to Monsalve for the final out of the game.

Matthew (Matt) Tallarini is the Founder and Chief Correspondent for the World Baseball Network.
