The Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana (LIDOM) is inching closer and closer to crowning a champion as the top four teams have started round-robin play. The Tigres del Licey, Estrellas Orientales, Aguilas Cibaeñas, and Leones del Escogido compete for the top two spots and a chance to play for the title.
Tigres hold off fierce comeback to maintain top position
The Tigres jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Leones on January 6. The Leones answered with two runs in the second inning, but the Tigres managed to make the score 7-2 heading into the fourth inning. The Leones continued to battle but left the tying run on third base in the ninth inning. Leadoff hitter and New York Mets outfielder José Siri continued to struggle in round-robin play, going 0-for-5 in the game. Meanwhile, Sergio Alcántara continued his strong hitting in the semifinal round. He went 3-for-5 in the contest.
Estrellas capitalize on Leones loss
The Estrellas are in sole possession of second place in the semifinal round. They came up with a come-from-behind victory against the Cibaeñas on Monday. After being down 2-0, Robinson Cano gave the Estrellas their first run in the fourth inning. After scoring a run in both the fifth and sixth innings, the Estrellas were in the lead. Jefry Yan continued his dominance out of the bullpen, again putting a zero on the scoreboard.
Robinson Canó dominating
Fresh off winning Most Valuable Player in the Liga Mexicana de Béisbol, Canó is dominating LIDOM. In nine regular season games, he had a .353 batting average and one home run. He had six RBIs as well. In the semifinal round, he has a .450/.429/.650 slash line. In just five games, he has seven RBIs and struck out just once.
