Serie del Rey: Game One Postponed, Entire Series Pushed Back Due To Political Event

Game one of the Serie del Rey between the Diablos Rojos del Mexico and the Sultanes de Monterrey was postponed by the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol, as protests surrounding the meeting of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Mexican federal legislature, created severe access problems to Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu.

“As is public knowledge, the Sala de Armas is being used as an alternative venue to the Chamber of Deputies, which is adjacent to Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu,” the LMB said in a statement announcing the postponement of the series. “The events that have occurred in the surrounding area have caused the closure of surrounding roads, which makes access to the stadium unfeasible.”

The Sala de Armas is a 5,000-seat indoor arena in Mexico City’s Ciudad Deportiva that is serving as an alternate venue for the Chamber of Deputies, which is meeting this week.

The area surrounding the Ciudad Deportiva, which includes Estadio Alfredo Harp Helu and the Hermanos Rodriguez race track, was besieged by protesters yesterday voicing their disapproval of proposed judicial reforms by Mexico’s ruling MORENA party, which would result in thousands of judges, including those who sit on Mexico’s supreme court, having their positions become elected judegships, rather than political appointments.

Because of the unrest in the area, the LMB postponed game one to Wednesday night, pushing the entire Serie del Rey back one day.
