The Road to Mexicali: Indios de Mayaguez Take 1-0 Lead in LBPRC Title Series; Licey Makes 3rd Straight LIDOM Final

Indios de Mayaguez 5, Senadores de San Juan 3 – Isan Diaz went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and David MacKinnon scored three runs for the Indios as they took a 1-0 series lead. Daryl Thompson allowed two runs on eight hits through four innings, striking out one and walking none, and five Mayaguez relievers combined to allow one run on three hits over the final five innings. Brantley Bell went 3-for-4 with a run scored for San Juan.

Aguilas Cibaenas (3-11) 1, Leones del Escogido (9-5) 0 – Alexander Canario’s solo homer in the second drove in the lone run of the game, propelling the Aguilas to their third win of the round robin. Seven Aguilas pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout, walking one and striking out eight. Veteran MLB starter Johnny Cueto allowed one run on five hits over five innings for the Leones.

Tigres del Licey (11-2) 2, Estrellas Orientales (5-9) 1 (10 Innings) – Gustavo Nunez’ 10th inning single sent Wilmer Difo home with the game-winning run as the Tigres clinched a berth in the LIDOM championship series for the third consecutive year. Licey went 5-1 against the Estrellas in this year’s round robin, and are 50-40 all-time against the green and gold in the playoffs. Juniel Querecuto drove in the Estrellas’ run in the fifth with a sac fly. Two innings later, Francisco Mejia tied the game with a sac fly of his own that scored Cristhian Adames. Six Licey relievers combined to allow two hits over six shutout innings to secure the win.

Liga Venezolana de Beisbol Profesional

Aguilas del Zulia (7-9) 6, Cardenales de Lara (11-5) 4 – Angel Reyes’ three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth pushed the Aguilas del Zulia past the Cardenales in the final game of the LVBP’s 16-game round robin. Jose Rondon clubbed a three-run homer in the first for Lara, which had already clinched a berth in the LVBP championship series.

Tigres de Aragua (5-11) 16, Navegantes de Magallanes (6-10) 4 – After struggling offensively through the LVBP round robin, the Tigres left no doubt in their final game of the year, hitting four homers on their way to their fifth win of the playoffs. Alexfri Planez hit a two-run homer in the sixth, and Yorman Rodriguez hit a grand slam later in the inning to put the Tigres up 12-2. Planez hit another two-run homer in the seventh, and Yermin Mercedes added a two-run shot of his own in the same inning.
