Indios de Mayaguez 3, Senadores de San Juan 2 – With solo homers from Martin Maldonado in the fifth and Danny Ortiz in the seventh, the Indios de Mayaguez got past the Senadores de San Juan 2-1 in game fourof the LBPRC championship series in San Juan.

San Juan got out to an early lead when Brantley Bell’s single to center allowed Cornelius Randolph to score from second for a 1-0 lead.

But that was the only offense San Juan could muster, as Mayaguez starter Ronnie Williams threw 5 2/3 innings of three-hit ball, striking out two and walking four before handing the ball over to the bullpen. Three Mayaguez relievers combined to allow two hits over 3 1/3 innings, preserving the lead.

The Senadores stranded nine runners and went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position, and only got two runners into scoring position after the second inning.

In the fifth, Emilio Bonifacio and Sergio Alcantara each hit RBI singles to give Licey a 2-1 lead.

Veteran starter Cesar Valdez threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts for the Tigres.

An RBI double from Cesar Mendoza in the second scored Dwight Smith Jr. for a 1-0 Culiacan lead, and a fifth inning double by Esteban Quiroz got Ramon Rios home to make it 2-0. An inning later, Ponch Ruiz singled home Smith to give the Charros a three-run lead.

In the eighth, the Charros threatened, with Billy Hamilton hitting a double to left that scored Donovan Casey and Jose Angel Cecena to cut the lead to 3-2. The runs were charged to Despaigne, and the double chased reliever Sasagi Sanchez from the game. The Tomateros brought out Stephen Nogosek, who retired all four batters he faced to earn a four-out save.
