The Road to Mexicali: Yaquis de Obregon Upset Naranjeros de Hermosillo As LAMP Playoffs Get Underway

No. 7 Yaquis de Obregon 2, No. 2 Naranjeros de Hermosillo 1 – Hermosillo’s Robert Stock, the winner of the Liga ARCO Mexicana del Pacifico’s pitching triple crown during the regular season, dueled with Odrisamer Despaigne for six innings before handing the ball off to Ricky Karcher. Karcher allowed a run on three hits in relief, while the Yaquis’ bullpen allowed one run on one hit over three innings as Obregon took a 1-0 series lead. Allen Cordoba and Roberto Valenzuela each had RBI singles for Obregon.

No. 1 Tomateros de Culiacan 3, No. 8 Venados de Mazatlan 2 – Starter Manny Barreda threw seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out three as Culiacan won the series opener. Efren Navarro drove in the game’s first run for the Naranjeros with a sac fly in the second and sent the fans home happy with a game-ending solo homer in the bottom of the ninth.

No. 6 Aguilas de Mexicali 9, No. 3 Charros de Jalisco 7 – Alejandro Flores drove in three runs for the Aguilas, hitting a solo homer in the second and a two-run shot in the third, and Norberto Obeso drove in the game-winning run with a bases-loaded double in the sixth that scored three. Jack Mayfield homered in the fourth for Jalisco, which scored four runs in the seventh but couldn’t complete the comeback. The Aguilas took a 1-0 series lead with the win.

No. 4 Caneros de Los Mochis 10, No. 5 Algodoneros de Guasave 0 – Someone tell the Algodoneros that the playoffs have started, as the managed just three hits and three walks, getting just two runners into scoring position. Los Mochis scored four in the bottom of the first and six in the bottom of the third, with regular season homer leader Yasmany Tomas launching a three-run shot in the third, getting three of his four RBIs in the game with a single swing.
