The VMI Keydets are off to an incredible 10-1 start this season. A part of their major success has been their small-ball style of play on the base paths. This is a team that leads the country in steals.
VMI leading the country in steals is putting it kindly. They have stolen an uncanny amount of bases this year. As of right now, the Keydets have stolen 90 bases as a team. This means their steals per game average sits at 8.18.
The team with the next best steal total is the Wofford Terriers with 48, a little over half of what VMI has.
When it comes to how each player has contributed to VMI’s stolen base total, the main player to look at is Owen Prince. He has 25 steals this season.

Not only does he lead the team, but he also leads the country.
Another Keydet player who has the second most steals in college baseball is Bradley Garner. He has 14 stolen bags this season.
Kazuya Jordan and Max Perry have also been big-time contributors in steals with 12 each. They rank among a handful of players who are tied for the fourth most steals in the country.
It will be interesting to see if VMI can keep this steal total up. Clearly, it is paying off with their record as they sit atop the Southern Conference (SOCON).
The Keydets’ next game is Friday, Mar. 7, when they will begin a four-game weekend series against Holy Cross. The game will be at Gray-Minor Stadium in Lexington, Va., and the first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST.
