Trevor Bauer took a big step towards returning to the rotation for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico, who have advanced to the second round of the playoffs in the Liga Mexicana de Beisbol.
Diablos Rojos spokesman Miguel Boada said in a statement that Bauer had left Mexico for the United States two weeks ago to seek treatment for gastrointestinal issues and returned to Mexico City, throwing live batting practice for the Diablos Rojos with the coaching staff paying close attention in advance of the Serie de Zona, which will begin on Wednesday.
“My body is fine, 100 percent, my arm too. I was at sea level for two weeks, so I have to recover my condition at this altitude, but it won’t be a problem, and I feel good,” Bauer said in a team press release. “It was a difficult two weeks, but the doctors in Arizona took care of me, gave me treatment, and I recovered quickly. I’m happy that it wasn’t as bad as it could have been, and I’m happy that I only missed one playoff series and that I’m back with the team.”
According to the Diablos, Bauer threw 65 pitches to teammates Japhet Amador, Ramón Flores, Jesús Fabela, and José Pirela in the session.
He last threw for the Diablos Rojos on July 26, against the Conspiradores de Querétaro, leaving after 2 1/3 innings with gastrointestinal discomfort.
“It was difficult to see the team playing in the playoffs because I wanted to be in the dugout with my teammates, to be part of the games, but I am happy that the team played and won, and now I am ready to be part of the roster in the second round, and it’s all about winning,” Bauer said in the team’s statement. “I’m ready to pitch again in this week’s game whenever the team tells me to.”
The Diablos Rojos will face the loser of the series between the Leones de Yucatan and Guerreros de Oaxaca. Oaxaca leads the series three games to two, with game six scheduled for Monday night at 8:30 p.m. EDT.
