The Padres added lefty pitching near the end of the deadline in Venezuelan Martin Perez from the Pirates. Pérez, a one-time All-Star, has struggled this year in Pittsburgh, so it makes sense that the Pirates wanted to move on to continue working with their young rotation.
San Diego gets a proven talent in Pérez, even though he has not excelled this year. Pittsburgh takes lefty pitcher Ronaldys Jimenez from San Diego as a part of the deal.
This is Martín Pérez’s 13th year in the big leagues, and he has had his fair share of highs and lows. Boasting a career 4.48 ERA, Pérez enjoyed a career year just two seasons ago, in 2022, with the Texas Rangers and a solid year with them last season. In 2022, Perez had a 12-8 record and a 2.89 ERA. He pitched 196 1/3 innings and made the All-Star Game that season. He signed with Pittsburgh this year and has been unable to replicate that magic. He has experience as both a starter and reliever so that he can eat innings for San Diego down the stretch.
The only player going to Pittsburgh in the deal is 18-year-old LHP Ronaldys Jimenez. The southpaw is from Sabaneta, Dominican Republic, and is a couple of years away from the major leagues. He is in his first season of professional baseball and has made three starts in rookie ball.
