Washington Nationals to Select the Contract of Andres Chaparro

Venezuelan native Andres Chaparro is set to have his contract selected by the Washington Nationals. The Nationals already have space on their 40-man roster, so they’ll just need to make a move to their 26-man roster to make room for the infielder.

The 25-year-old corner infielder was originally signed as a free agent in 2015 with the New York Yankees. He would spend seven seasons in the Yankees organization, including his breakout season in 2023 with Triple-A Scranton, hitting a career-high 25 home runs. The Yankees would release Chaparro at the end of the season, and the Arizona Diamondbacks would scoop him up.

Chaparro started the 2024 season with Triple-A Reno in the D-Backs organization. Dominating the competition in 95 games, Chaparro hit a career-best .332, mashing 19 home runs and 75 RBIs, knocking on Arizona’s door to do anything for a promotion to the show. As the 2024 MLB trade deadline passed a few weeks ago, the Diamondbacks sent Chaparro to the Washington Nationals in exchange for veteran reliever Dylan Floro.

After being sent to the Nationals, he continued right where he left off and stayed the hitter he has always been. In only ten games with Triple-A Rochester, Chaparro hit .286, but what was more impressive was his four home runs and ten RBIs in that short amount of time. He will join the Nationals as they prepare for a series with their rival Baltimore Orioles.

Washington is currently fourth in the N.L. East standings, 15 and a half games back of the Phillies, who are in first place. We will have to see who gets bumped off Washington’s current active roster and if Chaparro could make a start in what would be his MLB debut on Tuesday.
