WBN’s International Player of the Week: Jean Segura

World Baseball Networks International Player of the Week is Leones del Escogido infielder Jean Segura. Segura, 34, is a Dominican-born right-handed hitter.

Segura has played in LIDOM for four winters. He made his LIDOM debut with Gigantes del Cibao in 2010-2011 and played three winters with them. This was his first winter playing for Leones del Escogido. His total numbers on the season, including the round-robin, are two home runs, 23 RBI, eight stolen bases, and an OPS of .701 in 167 at-bats.

He has excelled in round-robin play, leading all LIDOM players with 14 RBI. He has also hit one home run, 14 hits in 43 at-bats (.326 batting average), and an OPS of .910. Segura’s best game of the week came in a 14-2 win against Tigres del Licey on January 13 at Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo. He went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base, and four RBI.

Segura also played for Team Dominican Republic in the 2023 World Baseball Classic and got one double in two at-bats. The Dominican Republic went 2-2 in Pool D at loanDepot Park in Miami and didn’t advance to the knockout stage.

Segura was a 12-year MLB veteran from 2012 to 2023. He signed with the Los Angeles Angels as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2007. He made his MLB debut with the Angels in 2012 and spent four seasons, each with the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies. He also played for the Seattle Mariners and the Arizona Diamondbacks and spent his last MLB season with the Miami Marlins in 2023. He was a two-time All-Star in 2013 and 2018.

His MLB career numbers are 110 home runs, 513 RBI, 211 stolen bases, and a slash line of .327/.401/.729 in 5,496 at-bats.
