On October 22, the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) announced that it had agreed to a partnership with Trackman. Trackman is a radar system that tracks and records a sports ball in motion to provide insight and data to teams, fans, and broadcasters. The radar system features 3D characteristics of the baseball in motion, and WBSC will implement the technology across its flagship baseball events.
The technology will debut in the WBSC, starting at the Premier12 tournament on November 9. Trackman uses Doppler technology, and it will also include the WBSC Baseball World Cup, which will be played at later dates. Trackman is used in several sports worldwide, including golf, and It also provides advanced analytics to improve broadcasts and keep fans locked in on all the action.
WBSC’s Executive Director Michael Schmidt explained, “I am very excited by this new partnership between the WBSC and Trackman, which will provide data to help take the storytelling of our sport to another level.” He added, “As the WBSC’s baseball tournaments become increasingly popular, Trackman will enhance our ability to engage fans and elevate the game.”
Trackman is used by all professional teams in the United States and Japan and is beginning to be used in leagues in Korea, Taiwan, and Latin America. It will provide the world’s most influential digital baseball platform/database with tons of technology that helps with in-game tracking solutions.
It will be fascinating to see how Trackman will be viewed throughout the Premier12 Tournament as WBSC announces its new partnership. Games will begin on November 9, where fans will get excited to see and learn about all things regarding exit velocities and distance to tracking fly balls in the outfield, and to help give more of a perspective into data that will drive more attention to the sport.
