Why Florida’s Midweek Win May Hold Implications for Weekend Series with Tennessee

On Tuesday, the Florida Gators won possibly the biggest midweek game of the season against the Florida State Seminoles, defeating them 7-2.

The win pushes Florida’s record to 16-2. They also handed Florida State their first loss of the season, bringing the Seminoles’ record to 15-1.

This leaves the Tennessee Volunteers as the sole undefeated team left in college baseball. A win on Tuesday over West Georgia moved their record to 17-0.

Funny enough, the Volunteers and Gators are on a collision course for this weekend. Both teams will open SEC play against each other in Knoxville, Tenn. beginning Friday.

This three-game series matchup will be must-watch T.V. between Florida and Tennessee.

It was already going to be must-watch T.V. before the season started. However, the Gators’ midweek win may have told us a lot about what to expect.

Florida went into an unbeaten team’s ballpark and beat them on Tuesday. They are heading to another unbeaten team’s ballpark this weekend for a three-game series.

Essentially, the Gators are up to this challenge and know what a series win in Knoxville will mean for them.

They would be responsible for not only beating two of their arch-rivals, but also ending unbeaten streaks with two of the country’s best teams.

Florida head coach Kevin O’Sullivan spoke about SEC play starting in Knoxville after the Florida State win in Tallahassee.

“We’re playing a tough opponent this weekend. We need to get healthy. Liam’s been good for us, should be a great matchup on Friday. If our bullpen continues to throw like this, we’ll be tough.”

In short, the Gators just ended Florida State’s unbeaten streak to start the season. Who is to say they cannot do it to Tennessee?
