Winter Ball Playoffs: Aguilas del Zulia, Cardenales de Lara Win Again In Venezuela; Plus A Fire In Santiago and a Postponement in Panama

Aguilas del Zulia 4, Bravos de Margarita 1 – Former Major Leaguer Rougned Odor drove in Zulia’s first run with a single in the first, and Jose Pirela hit a three-run homer in the eighth to get the Aguilas their second win of the round robin. Seven Zulia pitchers combined to allow one run on seven hits, with Silvio Bracho earning a three-out save in the ninth.

Cardenales de Lara 5, Tigres de Aragua 4 – Down 4-1 after six innings, the Cardenales, who won the LVBP’s regular season title, got two-run homers from Ali Sanchez in the seventh and Hernan Perez in the ninth to improve to 3-0 in the round robin. Brian McKenna earned the win in relief, striking out two in the eighth, his only inning of work for Lara.

Fire At the Eagle’s Nest – A fire broke out Sunday night at Estadio Cibao in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, the home of LIDOM’s Aguilas Cibaenas. Team officials told Al Momento, a Dominican news outlet, that the fire didn’t affect the stadium and will not affect the team’s playoff schedule. The LIDOM Round Robin begins Thursday, January 2, and games will be played in both the Dominican Republic and at Miami’s loanDepot Park.

Postponement in Panama – An accident involving two tank trucks near Estadio Rod Carew in Panama City, Panama, postponed Game One of the LBPB’s semifinal series between the Federales de Chiriqui and the Aguilas Metropolitanas.

“After consulting with the Deputy Director of the National Police and the Fire Department, we have been informed that the operations to remove the trucks and clean up the spilled fuel will take between five and six hours. These tasks are essential to ensure the safety of the road and of those attending the event,” the league said in an announcement on its’ website.

The game has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 2, at 6 p.m. EST.

Panama participated in the Caribbean Series from 2019-2024 but was not invited to the 2025 event and will instead send its 2025 champion to the Serie de las Americas in Managua, Nicaragua, in January.
