Yoan Moncada was representing Cuba in this year’s Premier12. However, in the team’s game against Korea, he was hit by a pitch in the hand, forcing him to exit the game.
Moncada has X-rays done. The results were negative for a fracture, but according to Francys Romero, the team may still be without him for the rest of the tournament.
“Yoan Moncada’s right hand revealed negative to fracture in X-rays, but there is substantial swelling, and he is doubtful for the rest of the Premier 12,” Romero wrote on X.
Cuba is currently 0-2 during the opening round. They find themselves in last place in Group B. Moncada was off to a slow start, going 1-7 to start the tournament.
Last season, he played just 12 games in the big leagues. However, Moncada was receiving interest as a free agent from more than five different teams, according to Romero.
“More than five MLB teams are interested in Moncada. Among the teams that have monitored him are the Blue Jays, Yankees, and Mariners,” Romero wrote on X.
Cuba will wait to see if the veteran can take the field again this tournament. With a stacked pool that includes Japan, the Dominican Republic, Chinese Taipei, Korea, and Australia, Cuba will need to win to qualify for the Super Round.
